We Need More Crybabies.
The other day, Hillary Clinton finally showed a bit of humanity when her voice cracked and trembled as she answered the question of a voter in New Hampshire. Clinton was responding to a question along the lines of “How do you stay so upbeat?”. Her eyes welled up, and she was noticeably distraught; understandable, considering how her position has slipped immensely since the Iowa Caucuses.
The newest Gallup Poll places her dead even with Obama – I’m not talking just in New Hampshire, I mean nationally. Considering all the money she’s raised, and all the time she’s spent in the early states, one sympathizes with the sorry state of her campaign.I digress. Her humanity. Those tears were the first indication I’ve seen since election season started that Clinton is deeply passionate about what she’s seeking to accomplish. Frankly, I wished she’d cry a bit more; she’s spent the last 6 months coming off as utterly disingenuous, and this may be a bit too little, a bit too late.
I understand why Clinton would be compelled to mask her emotions. People discredit her for being a woman. If she becomes an emotional woman she loses that much more support. So she’s gotta cover it up in the same way that the male candidates do, but because her gender is in some circles a political liability, she is doubly pressured to keep a stiff upper lip.
The other candidates should try crying. Maybe not Obama or McCain, but the others who come off as a little phony or evasive (see: Mitt Romney, John Edwards). I’m of the opinion that the average person is, at bottom, more disenchanted by the fakery and showmanship of the American political process, than the politics of the individuals involved in it.
